What are lifting and lashing points?
The connection between any load and the lifting gear needs a lifting point. There are many different options available depending on your application including screw in eyebolts, load rings and weld on lifting brackets. All are designed to ensure that once you attach the hook, rope, wire or chain slings etc. to the lifting point it is adequately secured so as not to not break free and, strong enough to lift and move the desired weight. When lifting anything it is highly important to keep your employees and yourself safe and critical that the lifting point is secured correctly to avoid it coming lose and objects falling from height.
Eyebolts
One widely used option is eyebolts (eye bolts). These are made from various metals such as high tensile or stainless steel and are available in metric and imperial sizes.
Eyebolts are screw-in bolt fixings which come in various lengths they are screwed into a pre-tapped threaded hole. Occasionally the threads are fed through a hole in the application and then secured with a bolt underneath.
Once in place you can attach your sling which is then connected to your lifting device such as a hoist or crane. Generally eyebolts are used in industrial applications for moving things such as machinery.
Eyenuts
Eyenuts (eye nuts) work in a similar way to Eyebolts but are threaded so screw onto an existing bolt. Eyenuts are available in various metals, both metric and imperial with a variety of finishes.
Load Rings
Load rings (swivel eye bolts) are also threaded lifting points but unlike eyebolts which are used in a vertical position with only a +/- 5 degree of side loading, load rings are usually rated for a variety of angles up to 180 degrees allowing more flexibility when moving large loads. There are various options which hold differing load sizes. Available in various material and thread sizes both metric and imperial.
Rectangular Deck Plate
Occasionally attachment points are not available, so rectangular deck plates can be the solution. Unlike eyebolts and load rings they are welded to your application whether that is a lifting block, beam, or boat hull. Produced from high tensile steel, once welded in place they will offer high proof load capacities.
