If the oil pressure inside the piston rod compartment is zero, the force on the piston rod is calculated by multiplying the pressure in the piston area and the pressure in the cylinder. In that case, if oil is pumped into the side-chamber of the piston rod, the piston shifts downwards and the oil, from the piston, returns to the reservoir without pressure.
